A review of Chorthippus species with angled pronotal lateral keels from Greece with special reference to transitional populations between some Peloponnesean taxa (Orthoptera, Acrididae) Naturalis
Willemse, F.; Helversen, O. von; Odé, B..
This paper presents a summary of the current knowledge on the systematics of the Greek taxa of Chorthippus, morphologically characterised by angled lateral pronotal keels (usually grouped as Glyptobothrus). Prior to this paper, based on traditional morphology, ten taxa of Chorthippus with angled lateral pronotal keels were recognized from Greece. Based on morphology as well as (and more importantly so) bioacoustics thirteen Greek taxa are now recognised. With addition of a few additional related taxa that occur only outside Greece, all are treated in this paper: Chorthippus apricarius apricarius (Linnaeus, 1758), C. vagans vagans (Eversmann, 1848) (not in Greece), C. v. cypriotus (Uvarov, 1936) stat. nov. [Cyprus], C. v. africanus Nadig, 1981 [N. Africa],...

A STRUCTURAL EQUATION MODEL: GREECE’S TOURISM DEMAND FOR TOURIST DESTINATION AgEcon
Chaitip, Prasert; Chaiboonsri, Chukiat; Kovacs, Sandor; Balogh, Peter.
Structural equation model (LISREL 8) was applied to test the causal relationships between tourist travel motivations and tourist destination. A survey containing Likert scale questions was conducted to collect data from 100 tourists who had travelled to Greece’s tourist destination. With the help of factor analysis, four dimensions were identified for scales used in the study: travel cost satisfaction, tourism product, tourism product attributes, and tourism product management. Results indicated that the travel cost satisfaction of tourists has a positive influence on tourism product, tourism product attributes and tourism product management. Moreover, our results suggested that the tourist demographics has a positive influence on tourism product and...

ADULT EQUIVALENT SCALES REVISITED AgEcon
Demoussis, Michael; Mihalopoulos, Vassilis.
Use of the Tobit model for estimation of adult equivalent scale (AES) parameters and expenditure equations presupposes that zero observations represent exclusively corner solutions. This paper tests for the underlying causes of zero observations and estimates accordingly the AES parameters, the household size in adult equivalents and the resulting expenditure equations and consumption profiles. The empirical application concerns Greek household "soft" and "hard" cheese consumption. The statistical results indicate that for the examined cheese categories the "double hurdle participation" model adjusted for non-normality and heteroskedasticity is the appropriate model for the estimation of AES parameters and expenditure equations.

Assessing the Perspectives of EU Cotton Farming: Technical and Scale Efficiencies of Greek Cotton Growers AgEcon
Pantzios, Christos J.; Rozakis, Stelios; Tzouvelekas, Vangelis.
Utilizing the stochastic frontier approach, this paper estimates output and input-oriented technical and scale efficiency levels for a sample of cotton-growing farms in Thessaly, Greece. The empirical results suggest that Greek cotton farm operations are technically and scale inefficient. There is a considerable scope for improvement in resource use and thereby in farm income of cotton farms; Greek cotton farmers could reduce production costs by 20.4%, making more efficient utilization of the existing production technology. Factors responsible for the technical efficiency differentials observed among cotton-growers include the farmer's age and education as well as the farm's land fragmentation and output specialization.

Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Pupillacea : XI. Speleodentorcula Beroni gen. & spec. nov. (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Orculidae) Aus einer Höhle in Euboea, Griechenland Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..
A new troglobitic genus and species, viz. Speleodentorcula beroni gen. & spec. nov., is described from the island of Euboea, Greece. The species, known from a single cave only, is quite isolated systematically. According to the structure of its shell and the genitalia S. beroni should be classified with the Orculidae. Within this family Speleodentorcula is most similar to Walklea anatomically; conchologically there is some vague resemblance to Fauxulus (apertural denticles) and Odontocyclas, Walklea, Fauxulus and Afriboysidia (surface sculpture). Speleodentorcula alone is considered the sister group of the taxon encompassing these last mentioned four genera.

Bio-energy production in the sugar industry: an integrated modeling approach AgEcon
Haque, Imdadul; Rozakis, Stelios; Ganko, Ewa; Kallivroussis, Leonidas.
Recent reforms in the Common Agricultural Policy and the sugar regime caused serious concerns for the future of the European sugar industry. At the same time, the European Commission considers transportation bio-fuels as a key factor for reducing reliance on imported fuels, emission levels of greenhouse gases and to meet rural development goals. Matching the sugar sector with bio-ethanol production may create opportunities for sustainable management of the existing sugar industry infrastructure and also serve bio-fuel policy targets. A partial equilibrium economic model is used in order to evaluate the shift from sugar to bio-ethanol production in Thessaly, Greece. In the agricultural feedstock supply and industrial processing sub-models are articulated...

CAP Reform and the Mediterranean EU-Member States AgEcon
Borresch, Rene; Kavallari, Aikaterini; Schmitz, P. Michael.
In the previous years the Mediterranean Member States of the EU came across the Reform of the CAP and especially last year faced the second wave of the Reform for three typical Mediterranean products, namely cotton, olive oil and tobacco. In this paper a partial equilibrium model is used to simulate the impacts of decoupling, as a key point of the decided CAP Reform. The second wave of the Reform appears to be of crucial importance for the southern EU countries and although the producer's income is reduced, there are positive welfare effects.

Classification of Potential Sheep Heat-Stress Levels According to the Prevailing Meteorological Conditions CIGR Journal
Dimitris K. Papanastasiou.
Many researchers have found that physiology, welfare, health, and productivity of ruminants are significantly affected when they are exposed to heat-stress conditions. In such cases, heat-stress may also cause a reduction of farmers’ profit in various ways. Heat-stress levels are significantly affected by the prevailing meteorological conditions. This paper aims to study the potential daily peak heat-stress conditions to which sheep are exposed and to classify them according to the prevailing meteorological conditions. For these purposes, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and incoming solar radiation data were analyzed. The meteorological data were recorded during the summers of the period 2007 – 2012 by an automated...

Comparison of Industrial Dynamics of Food and Beverage Industry in Bulgaria, Romania and Greece AgEcon
Kopeva, Diana Ilieva; Shterev, Nikolay; Blagoev, Dimitar.
Industry dynamic is a key indicator for sustainable industry growth. It depends on variety of factors on international and regional level. One of the important driving forces on international level is seen in the face of economic and political alliances. Cultural and regional policies, and social behaviour are driving industry dynamics on a regional level though. Our hypothesis is that specific differences of industrial dynamics of the Balkan countries occurred based on economic and political alliances (EU membership; Euro zone, Black Sea Economic Cooperation). This hypothesis is verified with analysis of a traditional for the Balkans industrial sector like Food and Beverage. The paper aims to find out more evidence to verify a basic hypothesis. It...

Consumer Behaviour towards Own Label: monitoring the Greek experience AgEcon
Boutsouki, Christina; Zotos, Yorgos; Masouti, Zafeiria.
In Greece, the traditional perceptions of private label were once of low quality, unbranded alternatives, attracting the most cost-conscious consumers. In today’s private label market, however, a different level of products has emerged – the premium “branded” private label product. Based on a consumer survey conducted in Greece, the current study discusses consumer’s attitude and satisfaction with respect to private label products. Frequency of purchase and consumer characteristics are also discussed in light of empirical evidence.

Consumer Motivations and Cognitive Structures behind Quality Food Purchasing AgEcon
Christos, Fotopoulos V.; George, Maglaras Ch.; Anastasios, Pagiaslis P..
The present paper presents a two stage research which aims to depict the motivations and cognitive structures of quality food consumers through the use of Means–End Chain (MEC) approach and laddering technique. Quality food entails both organic and local protected/traditional products. The first stage of the research involved a meta-analysis of published journal articles regarding the purported motivations and cognitive structures of consumers when purchasing quality food. The results show that the values and motivations identified by the various researches varied greatly, thus a thematic categorization followed in order to produce a useful conceptual framework for the analysis of quality food cognitive structures. In the second stage we validated the...

Development and Prospects of the Greek Cooperative Credit System AgEcon
Karafolas, Simeon.
The credit cooperative system was established in Greece in 1993, following the creation of the appropriate legislative framework. The Greek system distinguishes two types of institutions: the cooperative bank that functions as a bank and the credit cooperative that cannot provide banking services. The Greek cooperative system is characterized by the autonomous and nonhomogenous development of the cooperative banks and credit cooperatives. Moreover, in 2001 the cooperative banks created a central nation-wide bank that has since helped the further development of the credit cooperative system. However and despite the large number of geographic departments involved in the credit cooperative system, the expansion of cooperative banks in the Greek bank market is...

Efficiency in Damage Control Inputs: A Stochastic Production Frontier Approach AgEcon
Karagiannis, Giannis; Tsionas, Efthimios; Tzouvelekas, Vangelis.
The present paper extents the existing literature providing a theoretically consistent framework for measuring input-specific technical efficiency in damage control inputs within a stochastic production frontier model. The theoretical framework for modeling damage control agents is based on Fox and Weersink (1995) model specification that allows for increasing returns on damage control inputs. The empirical model accounts veterinary expenses as the damage control input and it is applied on a panel data set of sheep farms in Greece during the 1989-92 period. The results suggest that sheep farms in Greece are using inefficiently immunization and antibiotics in their flock as their average technical efficiency level was 72.82%. On the other hand, technical...

Evading Farm Support Reduction via Efficient Input Use: The Case of Greek Cotton Growers AgEcon
Pantzios, Christos J.; Rozakis, Stelios; Tzouvelekas, Vangelis.
The present paper examines the importance that efficient resource use may have for cotton growers under the current EU policy regime. To that end, input-oriented technical and scale efficiency score for a sample of 172 cotton-growing farms are empirically quantified. The results suggest that cotton farms in the sample are not efficient mainly due to the nature of the policy regime governing the sector throughout EU. By becoming efficient, the co-responsibility levy will be reduced by 18.3% and farms may increase their profits by 50.1% on the average.
